Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al

Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al Jarwan's Professional Journey

Critical turning points in my professional trajectory encompassed dedicated service in the UAE Armed Forces. My leadership journey further evolved during my roles as the Deputy Military Attaché of the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C., and later in London. Subsequently, as a member of the Federal National Council of the UAE from 2011 to 2018, my commitment to leadership deepened, paving the way for one of the most pivotal phases—the presidency of the Arab Parliament for two consecutive rounds (2012–2016). Here, I showcased exceptional leadership, a precursor to subsequent influential roles, notably the founding of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace in 2017.

I am currently holding different positions, as the President of the Arab Experts Union, President of the Paris Forum for Peace, and Development, President of the Executive Office of the Arab Federations’ Forum, and President of the Fundación for Islamic Culture and Religious Tolerance.   In addition to these roles, I have, today, the honour of leading the Refugees Committee under the Executive Office of the Arab Federation, which belongs to the Arab League.

The Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, an international platform committed to the principles of tolerance and the promotion of noble human objectives, was formally established in November 2017 in Valletta, Malta. This pivotal moment marked the signing of headquarters, privileges, and immunities agreements with the government of Malta, designating it as the official headquarters of GCTP.

Operating within a framework of democratic principles, GCTP draws inspiration from International Law and Covenants to shape its organizational structure. The primary mission of GCTP is to propagate the culture of tolerance and peace, addressing contemporary challenges to global harmony. This objective is pursued through various components, with a particular focus on the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) and the General Assembly for Tolerance and Peace (GATP).

The IPTP, a cornerstone of our council and an observatory member of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU),  is a dynamic assembly comprising approximately 100 state members. It serves as a crucial platform for parliamentary dialogue and cooperation among nations, fostering collaboration to address pressing global issues.

In parallel, the GATP is a vital organ of GCTP, bringing together more than 50 academic institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals. This diverse assembly plays a pivotal role in shaping global policies that advance tolerance, inclusivity, and peace.

Among the numerous initiatives undertaken by the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, one that I believe has had a particularly profound impact on fostering global peace and tolerance is the establishment and launch of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace. This initiative, launched in 2018 has been instrumental in bringing together MPs representatives from over 100 countries.

The International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace serves as a unique platform for global parliamentarians to engage in dialogue, share perspectives, and collaborate on issues related to tolerance and peace. By facilitating international cooperation and understanding, this initiative contributes to breaking down barriers, promoting cross-cultural communication, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for addressing global challenges.

The inclusivity of the International Parliament, with its diverse representation, aligns with the core values of tolerance promoted by the Council. It provides a space where nations can work together to address common concerns, promote human rights, and combat discrimination and extremism. The impact of such a collaborative and inclusive platform extends beyond diplomatic circles, influencing public discourse and contributing to a broader cultural shift towards tolerance and peace.

Today the International Parliament is partnering with many regional parliaments such as the Arab parliament, Pan-Africa, Palatino, ASEAN parliament, and many other national parliaments.

On the Other hand, The General Assembly for Tolerance and Peace, established on September 23, 2019, at the UN headquarters in New York during the UN High-Level Forum on Peace, has achieved significant milestones in advancing its mission of promoting tolerance and peace globally. Today, with over 50 academic institutions and NGOs joining its ranks, the General Assembly has emerged as a dynamic hub for collaborative efforts. Notably, the Assembly has pioneered the establishment of an Academic Advisory Board comprising esteemed professors worldwide. This Board has been instrumental in developing a groundbreaking master's program in Tolerance Studies and Global Peace—the first of its kind. This innovative program is now offered as a double degree in partnership with a Spanish university, with the Council awarding 30 scholarships to deserving candidates.

In addition to its educational initiatives, the General Assembly has substantially contributed to the intellectual discourse on tolerance and peace. It proudly published its inaugural book, "Paths to a Culture of Tolerance and Peace," offering valuable insights and perspectives on fostering understanding and harmony. Undeterred in its commitment to knowledge dissemination, the Assembly is currently in the process of publishing another impactful book titled "From Idea to Reality: Fostering the Wealth of Refugees." These publications reflect the Assembly's dedication to sharing innovative ideas and practical approaches that contribute to the advancement of global peace and the cultivation of a culture of tolerance.

GCTP, Science, technology and innovation

In a world characterized by cultural diversity and historical complexities, the transformative potential of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in promoting tolerance and peace cannot be overstated. Amidst the myriad of challenges and conflicts, STI serves as a beacon of hope, capable of building bridges, nurturing tolerance, and paving the path towards enduring peace.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and play a pivotal role in fostering peace worldwide. Among these goals, Goal 16 - 'Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions' - stands out as a direct commitment to advancing peaceful societies. It encompasses objectives aimed at reducing violence, ensuring access to justice, and fostering transparent and accountable institutions. Countries worldwide, not just in the Arab region, have embraced these goals as guiding principles for their development agendas. By striving towards the objectives outlined in Goal 16, nations contribute not only to their internal stability but also to regional and global peace efforts.

Initiatives focused on enhancing governance, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting equitable access to justice are crucial steps toward creating stable and peaceful environments. The commitment to achieving Goal 16 underscores the universal importance of fostering tolerance and peace as integral components of sustainable development.

Research forms the empirical foundation for understanding the multifaceted challenges facing the world, ranging from poverty and inequality to climate change and healthcare disparities. Scientific advancements drive innovative solutions and technologies that can turn these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development. For example, scientific research informs strategies for mitigating climate change, while technological innovations in renewable energy contribute to accessible and clean energy (SDG 7).

Furthermore, technology plays a vital role in facilitating data collection, analysis, and dissemination, enabling evidence-based decision-making and monitoring progress toward all SDGs. Through research, science, and technology, solutions to global issues can be unlocked, ensuring inclusivity and leaving no one behind in the pursuit of a more equitable, prosperous, and sustainable world.

These pillars of progress are essential to the collective effort to achieve the SDGs and create a brighter future for all, transcending geographic boundaries and cultural contexts.

The Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP) stands as a beacon of hope in a world fraught with challenges, offering numerous opportunities and strengths in its pursuit of fostering tolerance and peace:

Multilateral Collaboration: One of the greatest strengths of the GCTP lies in its ability to bring together diverse stakeholders from around the world. By fostering multilateral collaboration among governments, Parliaments, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector, the council leverages collective expertise and resources to address complex global challenges.

Advocacy for Peaceful Solutions: The GCTP serves as a powerful advocate for peaceful resolutions to conflicts, advocating for dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation as alternatives to violence and aggression. Through its advocacy efforts, the council promotes a culture of peace and understanding, influencing policies and attitudes at both the national and international levels.

Platform for Dialogue: As a neutral platform for dialogue and engagement, the GCTP provides a space for individuals and communities to come together, share perspectives, and build mutual understanding. By facilitating open and inclusive discussions, the council fosters dialogue across cultural, religious, and ideological divides, promoting empathy and cooperation.

Educational Initiatives: The GCTP recognizes the critical role of education in promoting tolerance and peace. Through its educational initiatives such as “Master’s program in Tolerance Studies and Global Peace”, workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, as well as developing series of books such as “Paths to a Culture of Tolerance and Peace” and “From idea to reality: fostering the wealth of Refugees” the council equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to build peaceful societies. By empowering youth and educators, the council invests in the future generation of peacemakers and change agents.

Strategic Partnerships: The GCTP collaborates with a wide range of international organizations, Parliaments, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations to maximize its impact and reach. By forging strategic partnerships, the council gains access to additional resources, expertise, and networks, amplifying its efforts to promote tolerance and peace worldwide.

Research and Innovation: The GCTP invests in research and innovation to develop evidence-based approaches to peacebuilding and conflict resolution. By leveraging the latest research findings and innovative technologies, the council identifies emerging trends, assesses best practices, and develops effective strategies to address evolving challenges.

Grassroots Engagement: The GCTP actively engages with grassroots organizations and local communities to promote peace from the ground up. By supporting grassroots initiatives, the council empowers communities to take ownership of their peacebuilding efforts, fostering resilience and sustainability in conflict-affected areas.

Conclusion: Inspiring Action for a Harmonious World

In summary, the GCTP embodies the collective strength and resilience of humanity in the face of adversity, offering opportunities for collaboration, advocacy, dialogue, education, innovation, and grassroots engagement.
