Argentina to Exit WHO Following U.S. Withdrawal, Citing "Deep Differences" on Health Management

In a major shift in global health politics, Argentina has announced its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), following in the footsteps of the United States. The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the U.S. to leave the WHO, criticizing its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Argentina's President, Javier Milei, has explained that the country's exit is driven by "deep differences regarding health management, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic." A spokesman for Milei, Manuel Adorni, stated that the decision stems from Argentina's desire to avoid international interference in its sovereignty, giving the country greater flexibility in implementing health policies that are better suited to its local context.

Milei, known for his "anarcho-capitalist" views and admiration for Trump, has frequently expressed his discontent with international organizations. The move to exit the WHO aligns with his broader political stance, which prioritizes national sovereignty and fiscal conservatism.

The announcement comes at a time when the U.S. has already withdrawn from the WHO, leaving the global health body facing significant funding challenges. The U.S. had been the largest contributor to the WHO, and Trump’s administration had sharply criticized the organization for its pandemic response, including what he claimed were inefficiencies and mismanagement.

Milei's government has also focused on austerity measures, slashing public spending and vowing to maintain a zero budget deficit. However, his economic policies, including cuts to public services, have resulted in increased poverty levels in Argentina. Despite these challenges, Argentina recorded its largest-ever trade surplus in 2024, driven in part by a decline in imports and reduced domestic spending.

Milei's decision to align with Trump, who was the first foreign leader to visit Milei after his election, highlights the growing influence of right-wing populist policies in global governance, particularly in health and economic sectors.
