BCCI Imposes New Restrictions on IPL 2025 Teams, Limits Practice Sessions

With the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season set to commence on March 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new restrictions on practice sessions for all participating teams.

As per the latest directive issued to the franchises, teams will be allowed a maximum of seven practice sessions under floodlights before their first match of the season. Additionally, only two warm-up matches will be permitted. The decision aims to protect pitch conditions, ensuring that the main playing surfaces remain in optimal condition ahead of the tournament.

Key Restrictions Imposed by BCCI

1. Practice Sessions Capped

   • Each IPL team can conduct a maximum of seven practice sessions before their first match.
   • These sessions will be limited to three hours and must be conducted under floodlights.

2. Restricted Use of Practice Matches

   • Teams can hold only two practice matches or open nets at their discretion.
   • These matches must take place on side wickets of the main square, ensuring the primary pitch remains undisturbed.
   • If conducted under floodlights, the match duration must not exceed three and a half hours.
   • Any practice match requires prior written approval from the BCCI.

3. Pitch Protection Measures

   • No practice sessions or matches will be allowed on the main square in the four days leading up to a team's first home match.
   • However, teams will have access to one side wicket for range hitting during this period.

4. Handling Conflicts in Training Schedules

   • If both home and away teams request practice at the same time, the BCCI will intervene to resolve the conflict.

   • The teams will be encouraged to mutually adjust their sessions.
   • If an agreement cannot be reached, the BCCI will allocate two separate two-hour training slots to ensure fair conditions for both sides.

Why the Restrictions?

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the restrictions were put in place due to heavy match schedules at IPL venues, particularly domestic cricket fixtures running close to the start of the IPL season. By limiting excessive use of stadium facilities, the BCCI aims to maintain the quality of pitches while ensuring that local tournaments, legends leagues, and celebrity matches can also access the grounds.
