Biden Signs Funding Bill, Averts Government Shutdown Before Christmas
President Joe Biden signed a crucial funding bill on Saturday, preventing a government shutdown just days before Christmas. The bill, passed after intense last-minute negotiations in Congress, ensures government operations will continue until March 14, 2025.
The signing came after days of uncertainty, with lawmakers scrambling to reach a deal following pressure from President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who criticized an earlier bipartisan agreement.
Avoiding a Shutdown
The bill’s passage prevents the furlough of 875,000 federal employees and ensures essential workers, including those in law enforcement, continue to be paid. National parks and monuments, which were at risk of closing during the holiday season, will also remain open.
"This agreement represents a compromise," President Biden said. "Neither side got everything it wanted, but it rejects a rushed tax cut for billionaires."
Trump and Musk's Role
President-elect Trump, along with Musk, heavily influenced the negotiations, urging Republicans to abandon the initial bipartisan deal. Their intervention led to delays, forcing Congress to negotiate a new funding package. The revised bill includes $110 billion in disaster aid and financial relief for farmers but excludes proposed pharmaceutical reforms and tighter restrictions on investments in China.
Musk’s involvement drew sharp criticism. Democrats accused him of using his influence to shape legislation, while some Republicans expressed frustration with his interference. "Elon Musk doesn’t have a vote in Congress," Republican Rich McCormick said. "Our job is to represent our constituents."
Looking Ahead
House Speaker Mike Johnson, who played a key role in finalizing the bill, described its passage as a temporary measure, with significant changes expected when Trump assumes office in January. "Things will be very different next year," Johnson said.
For now, the funding bill averts a holiday-season crisis, providing temporary relief while setting the stage for further political battles in 2025.
