Biscuits Play Unlikely Role in Key Encounter Against Lashkar Commander in Srinagar

In a high-stakes operation, security forces in Srinagar successfully eliminated a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Usman, following a tense, day-long encounter in the densely populated Khanyar locality. The encounter, which unfolded on Saturday, marked the first major gunfight in Srinagar’s downtown area in over two years, and a surprising element—biscuits—proved instrumental in its success.

The Role of Biscuits in a Delicate Operation

A unique challenge during the operation was posed by stray dogs, whose barking risked alerting Usman to the approaching forces. To avoid detection, security teams were equipped with biscuits to pacify the dogs, ensuring they could move closer to the target without raising alarms. This unconventional solution underscores the level of planning and adaptability by the local police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to minimize risks and increase operational precision.

Targeting a High-Profile Commander

Usman, who had significant experience navigating the Valley’s terrain, had orchestrated multiple terror attacks since he first became active in the region in the early 2000s. After spending time in Pakistan, he returned to Jammu and Kashmir around 2016-17 and was implicated in the killing of police inspector Masroor Wani last year. Intelligence pinpointed his presence in a residential cluster, prompting a carefully planned nine-hour operation to avoid civilian casualties.

The Intense Standoff

Before dawn (Fajar prayers), security forces cordoned off an area of 30 homes, setting the stage for the encounter. Armed with an AK-47, a pistol, and grenades, Usman engaged in a prolonged exchange of gunfire with the forces. Exploding grenades led to a fire in his hideout, which security personnel contained swiftly to prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes.

After several hours of intense fighting, Usman was neutralized, marking a strategic victory against The Resistance Front, an LeT offshoot responsible for targeting non-local laborers and security personnel. While four security personnel sustained injuries, all are reportedly in stable condition.
