India’s Squad for Champions Trophy 2025: Ex-Cricket Stars Drop Rishabh Pant from 15-Member Side

The debate over India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has taken an interesting turn as former cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Sanjay Bangar excluded Rishabh Pant from their ideal 15-member team. The decision has sparked a lively discussion among fans and experts, particularly regarding the wicket-keeper batter's role.

The Wicket-Keeper Conundrum

India boasts three top-tier wicket-keeper batters in KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson, making the selection a contentious topic. KL Rahul, who has been India's first-choice keeper in ODIs, received backing from both Manjrekar and Bangar, while Pant and Samson were overlooked.

Sanjay Bangar’s Verdict

Speaking on Star Sports, Bangar justified his decision, pointing out Pant’s lack of form in ODIs:
"Pant was away from cricket for a long time. He made a good return in T20Is and Tests but hasn’t performed well in ODIs. KL Rahul should be the first-choice keeper," Bangar stated.

Manjrekar’s Take

Sanjay Manjrekar advocated for Sanju Samson as the backup wicket-keeper over Pant, citing Samson’s potential as a big hitter in the final overs:
"I have been a believer in Samson. While he wasn’t consistent initially, he brings power-hitting ability for the last 10 overs, which India might need. I agree with Bangar on Pant," said Manjrekar.

Pant’s Struggles in ODIs

Rishabh Pant returned to competitive ODI cricket in 2024 during India’s tour of Sri Lanka but failed to impress. Playing only one match in the series, he managed just six runs in nine balls while batting at No. 4.

Samson’s Inconsistent Journey

Although Samson has displayed brilliance in T20Is, his case for ODI inclusion remains shaky. His omission from Kerala's Vijay Hazare Trophy squad due to non-attendance at a team camp raised further doubts about his form and fitness.

A Balanced Squad for 2025?

While KL Rahul’s role as the primary wicket-keeper seems sealed, the backup position continues to be a divisive issue. With the Champions Trophy just months away, Team India’s selectors face tough decisions that could shape the tournament’s outcome.

As discussions heat up, fans eagerly await the official squad announcement, which will put an end to the speculation and set the stage for India's campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025.
