Columbus Zoo Celebrates Birth of Critically Endangered Western Lowland Gorilla
The Columbus Zoo in Ohio, USA, is delighted to announce the birth of a critically endangered western lowland gorilla, adding to its gorilla family. Born to first-time mother Sue and experienced father Ktembe, this baby gorilla arrived early on Saturday, June 29.

Zoo officials report that Sue is providing excellent care, nurturing the newborn with affectionate nuzzles and cradles. To facilitate bonding, the zoo has temporarily closed the indoor viewing habitat in its Congo Expedition region.

Critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, western lowland gorillas face threats from habitat loss and the illegal bushmeat trade. The Columbus Zoo, renowned for its gorilla program since the birth of Colo in 1956, celebrates its 35th gorilla birth with this new arrival.
The pairing of Sue and Ktembe was guided by the Species Survival Plan, ensuring genetic diversity in zoo populations of endangered species. The zoo's Animal Care team is dedicated to the well-being of its gorilla family.

Audra Meinelt, Curator of the Columbus Zoo’s Congo Expedition, commends the care teams for their dedication to the gorillas' welfare.
Starting July 8, visitors can see the expanded gorilla family daily from 11 am to 6 pm. While baby gorilla viewing is not guaranteed due to habitat access, the zoo invites guests to experience this special moment.
