Dense Fog and Severe AQI Disrupt Travel in Delhi: Airlines and Authorities Issue Advisories

Table of Contents

Delhi faced significant disruptions on Monday, November 18, as dense fog and worsening air quality hampered travel across the Capital. With visibility plummeting and the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching hazardous levels, both airlines and airport authorities issued advisories to passengers.

Airlines Warn of Delays Amid Poor Visibility

IndiGo Airlines alerted passengers about potential travel delays due to fog and reduced visibility. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the airline urged travelers to allow extra time for their journey and to verify their flight status before heading to the airport. The statement read, “Fog is currently affecting visibility in Delhi, which may result in slow-moving traffic and delays in flight schedules. Safe travels!”

Similarly, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced the implementation of Low Visibility Procedures (LVP). "All flight operations are currently normal, but passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information," DIAL stated.

Air Quality Worsens, GRAP Stage IV Implemented

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated further, with the AQI entering the 'Severe+' category. The city recorded an alarming AQI of 457 on Sunday, prompting authorities to enforce emergency measures under Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Measures include:

  • Banning non-essential truck traffic into Delhi.
  • Halting all construction and demolition activities.
  • Intensifying enforcement of restrictions from GRAP Stages I, II, and III.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has warned that the 'Severe' AQI level poses significant health risks, even to healthy individuals, while exacerbating conditions for those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular issues.

Dense Fog Adds to Travel Woes

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, predicting "dense" to "very dense" fog over Delhi and surrounding regions. Visibility could drop to as low as 200 meters, impacting road, rail, and air travel. While flight operations remained unaffected as of Monday morning, authorities cautioned that delays may occur if conditions persist.

Conclusion

As Delhi grapples with dual challenges of dense fog and hazardous air quality, passengers are advised to stay updated on travel schedules and follow advisories from airlines and authorities. The worsening conditions underline the urgent need for effective measures to address the Capital’s persistent air pollution crisis.
