New Delhi – Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has thrown his full support behind star batter Virat Kohli, dismissing concerns over his vulnerability to leg-spinners and reaffirming his importance to the team’s future following the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Kohli’s match-winning 84-run knock in the semifinal against Australia helped India chase down 265 in challenging conditions, securing a four-wicket victory and a place in the final, where they will face either New Zealand or South Africa.

"A Phenomenal One-Day Cricketer"

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gambhir lauded Kohli’s ability to plan his innings strategically and adapt to different match situations.

“He is a phenomenal one-day cricketer. He knows how to plan his runs, whether he is batting first or chasing. He adapts to conditions quickly, which is why experience and high-quality players are so important. His record in ODIs speaks for itself, and I hope he continues this in the future as well,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir Dismisses Concerns Over Kohli’s Struggles Against Leg-Spin

Kohli’s weakness against leg-spinners was exposed during ODIs against Sri Lanka and England before the tournament. However, Gambhir dismissed any worries, arguing that after playing 300 ODIs, it is natural for a player to be dismissed by different types of bowlers.

"He has scored a hundred and a near-century in this competition. When you have played so many ODIs, you will get out to certain bowlers. That is part of the game,” he added.

Backing Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs

Gambhir also defended both Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma, emphasizing their proven track record in the 50-over format, despite criticism over their Test performances.

“They have been exceptional players in this format for so many years. There was never a doubt about their ability, experience, or hunger to perform in big tournaments. They have shown that once again in this competition,” Gambhir stated.

With Kohli playing a key role in India’s Champions Trophy campaign, fans and analysts will be eager to see if he can lead the team to glory in the upcoming final.
