Live Updates: HMPV Virus Cases in India, Health Minister Assures No Cause for Panic
A total of 11 cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported across India, with Maharashtra now accounting for three cases. The virus, which presents symptoms similar to COVID-19, has raised concerns, leading to states setting up special ICU wards to treat affected patients.
Cases have been reported in Bengaluru (2), Gujarat (1), Chennai (2), Kolkata (3), Nagpur (2), and Mumbai (1). The latest case involves a six-month-old baby at Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, Mumbai.
Health experts, including former AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria, emphasized that HMPV is not new and generally causes mild illnesses. However, it can lead to complications like pneumonia in infants, the elderly, or individuals with pre-existing conditions. Dr. Guleria advised symptomatic treatment, hydration, and avoiding crowded places to curb the spread.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public, stating, "HMPV is not a novel virus. There is no reason to worry. The situation is being closely monitored." States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have issued guidelines and urged residents to remain calm.
The government has enhanced healthcare measures, including establishing dedicated ICU wards in hospitals across affected regions. Citizens are advised to follow health protocols and stay updated.
