Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering, concluded on Wednesday, February 26, with the final holy dip on Mahashivratri. This year’s grand event saw an estimated 66 crore devotees taking a sacred bath at the Triveni Sangam, marking a historic turnout. However, amid the spiritual fervor, the mela was also marred by tragic stampedes and viral social media sensations that captivated millions.

A Record-Breaking Footfall

The Maha Kumbh Mela commenced on January 13, attracting Hindu devotees, ascetics, and tourists from across the world. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, more than 66 crore pilgrims participated in the holy baths at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The final tally of attendees is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming days.

The event showcased grand processions by various ‘Akharas’ (Hindu monastic orders), with saints and ascetics performing the revered ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath). The sight of saffron-clad monks, Naga sadhus smeared in ash, and devotees chanting hymns created an unparalleled spiritual atmosphere.

Viral Figures: ‘Monalisa’ and ‘IIT Baba’

The Maha Kumbh 2025 not only witnessed massive religious participation but also saw ordinary individuals gaining unexpected fame. One such figure was Monalisa Bhosle, a 16-year-old garland seller from Madhya Pradesh, who became an overnight internet sensation after her striking appearance went viral on social media. Crowds swarmed around her for selfies, and speculation about her earning ₹10 crore in ten days surfaced, though she later denied the claims. Her newfound fame even landed her a film offer.

Another viral personality was Abhey Singh, dubbed ‘IIT Baba,’ a self-proclaimed former aerospace engineer from IIT Bombay who renounced material life to embrace spiritual devotion. His articulate speeches in fluent English and engaging interactions with journalists sparked discussions on the intersection of science and spirituality. Many on social media hailed his transformation as an inspiration.

Tragic Stampedes and Safety Concerns

Despite the grandeur of the event, the Maha Kumbh 2025 faced multiple tragic incidents. A devastating stampede on January 29 at the Sangam site during Mauni Amavasya claimed at least 30 lives and injured over 60 people as thousands of pilgrims rushed for the holy dip. Authorities struggled to manage the overwhelming crowd despite extensive security measures.

Another stampede occurred on February 15 at New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), where an overcrowded foot overbridge led to a tragic fall, resulting in the deaths of 18 passengers and injuries to more than a dozen others. The rush was attributed to the heavy influx of devotees returning from the Kumbh, highlighting the immense strain on transportation infrastructure.

Fires at the Mela Grounds

Several fire incidents were reported during the festival. The most severe occurred on January 19 in Sector 19 of the mela site, where a cylinder blast led to a massive blaze, gutting over a dozen camps. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Another fire on January 25 saw two cars engulfed in flames in Sector 2 due to an electrical short circuit, though no injuries were recorded.

Political Controversies and Water Quality Debate

The Maha Kumbh 2025 was not devoid of political drama. Opposition parties accused the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government of mismanagement, particularly after the January 29 stampede. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the event ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ (Death Kumbh), while other opposition leaders alleged that the government downplayed the actual casualty figures.

Concerns were also raised over the quality of water at the Sangam, with reports indicating high levels of faecal bacteria and total coliform. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the water quality at several locations in Prayagraj did not meet the primary bathing standards. However, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath refuted these claims, asserting in the state assembly that the Ganga’s water was safe for both bathing and ritual consumption.

Conclusion

The Maha Kumbh 2025 was a blend of devotion, faith, and controversy. While it set a record for the highest attendance, it also underscored critical challenges in crowd management, infrastructure, and public safety. As devotees return home carrying spiritual memories, authorities will likely reflect on the lessons learned to ensure a safer and better-organized Maha Kumbh in the future.
