My name is Manjunath Chandrashekaraiah, and I currently hold the Senior Principal Firmware Engineer position at Astera Labs, USA. I am proud to have been born in the era of evolving computer and silicon technology and raised in the 80s in Tumakuru district, Karnataka, India, where I completed my schooling at Vivekananda High School, one of the premier high schools in the district. I pursued junior college at Sarvodaya Pre-University, which is known for producing high-caliber, world-class citizens and leaders. Academically, I excelled throughout my academic journey and pursued a bachelor's degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering at Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Bangalore University, graduating in 2001. This education laid a solid foundation for my career.
Professional Journey and Achievements
My professional journey began in 2001 as a Design Engineer at Buildmet Technologies in Bangalore, India, a startup at the time. There, I worked on end-to-end product development spanning hardware, software, and system development, delivering high-quality products in the automotive and consumer electronics domains. I played diverse roles, contributing to the company’s exponential growth and multi-million-dollar revenue generation. This experience laid a strong foundation for my career. Over the years, I have held various roles at leading technology companies such as Bosch, Hewlett-Packard, Collabera, SanDisk–Western Digital, Micron Semiconductor, Aptiv, and currently Astera Labs. I gained extensive hands-on experience in systems design, product architecture, customer advisory, and firmware architecture, optimizing novel storage solutions for global customers and significantly impacting revenue generation through pioneering products and solutions.
Since 2001, I have contributed to the semiconductor and automotive technology domains, enabling novel technologies and generating global business opportunities with profitable outcomes. Starting as an individual contributor and design engineer, I grew to lead teams, managing nine engineers directly and leading global systems engineering efforts involving technically engaging with over 25 engineers across India, the US, and Israel. Currently, I focus on delivering cutting-edge firmware for purpose-built connectivity solutions for AI-ML infrastructure hyperscale customers.
In recognition of my contributions, I have received multiple accolades for delivering impactful semiconductor products and innovations. I hold four USPTO-granted patents, with one pending at the USPTO. As an innovator, I actively contribute to firmware quality reviews and critically review product architecture, design, and implementation.

I am a Senior Principal Firmware Engineer in the Systems and Software group at Astera Labs, Santa Clara, California, USA. In this role, I drive product development through innovative firmware architecture, design, and implementation, creating differentiated product capabilities for purpose-built connectivity technologies used in AI-ML infrastructure. This requires a niche skillset, passion and exceptional abilities and subject matter expertise to drive the innovation. I lead design and development efforts engaging with engineering teams across multiple sites in the US, Canada, and Asia, ensuring innovation and excellence delivery in product development that drives exponential business growth.
What I enjoy most is driving innovation at the forefront of connectivity technology for AI-ML infrastructure. This infrastructure, built around novel semiconductor chip technologies, supports global hyperscale customers who enable various industries, research organizations, and national bodies. Collaborating with brilliant minds worldwide enriches me, and mentoring professionals at different levels provides immense satisfaction. I enjoy solving complex technical challenges and contributing to impactful products that shape the future. What has been your proudest professional accomplishment?
My proudest professional accomplishments include delivering multiple generations of removable storage products, first-of-a-kind industry-leading SSD solutions for automotive and industrial applications, and emerging connectivity solutions for AI-ML hyperscale infrastructure. Collaborating closely with stakeholders, I helped define specifications to meet performance, power, and capability requirements, leading to differentiated products. As a front-runner in product development, I delivered world-class solutions, created new business opportunities, and established myself as a trusted advisor and innovator.
At SanDisk–Western Digital, I designed and developed a novel qualification hardware platform for validating multiple storage products, reducing platform costs by 70% and boosting productivity. I transitioned from an individual contributor to an Engineering Manager, leading global teams and driving system engineering solutions for storage products. The recognition through accolades and global conference presentations reflects my dedication to excellence and innovation.
Overcoming Career Challenges
What is one major challenge you've faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?
One major challenge I faced in my career was managing the transition of Semiconductor removable storage products – SD/micro-SD, UFS, Compact Flash development, and deployment of solutions across a multitude of hardware platforms which keeps changing across industry dynamics. I have led the team to adapt to these dynamic forces in technology with an innovative spirit, thus impacting the business opportunities positively. I have adapted swiftly to customer-centric dynamics and delivered several products and solutions with high quality and maintainability. Addressed several challenges associated with technical gaps, and team synergy alignment through mentorship, Delivered the robust qualification platform for system engineering and firmware development initiatives impacting global engineering functions.
When I moved to the USA to join Lochbridge/CWPS (now DMI) to work as a consulting architect at Ford, Dearborn- Michigan, I was tasked with defining a novel basic design architecture for Embedded automotive applications based on cutting edge semiconductor high performance computing chips with functional safety and cybersecurity as primary focus. The challenge lay in defining a novel architecture supporting various electronic control units across In-vehicle infotainment, Telematic control units, Networking chips integration, Cybersecurity, and high-performance computing platform fusion at the same time supporting legacy architecture seamlessly. My technical leadership with exceptional abilities with a blend of passion for quality and customer obsession has resulted in impacting the customers and partners worldwide in significantly reducing product costs through innovation while achieving high quality at the same time. Especially with a novel semiconductor computing processing architecture definition that I passionately delivered has led to the generation of new business opportunities, exponential revenue and has set a strong benchmark in the semiconductor and automotive applications industry remarkably.
To overcome this, I focused on three key areas:
Extensive Research and competitive analysis: I established a core team to conduct deep research and competitive analysis across global teams to cover the breadth and depth of semiconductor hardware platforms with a focus on networking protocols, fusion of ECUs, common software-defined architecture, and Cloud to vehicle communication interface with robustness.
Key partnerships and collaboration with Customers, Tiers, and OEMs:
I established a trusted advisory engagement with customers, Tiers, and OEMs to evaluate the emerging use cases to identify the hardware and software platform that is novel and scalable to achieve significantly reduced development and production costs and at the same time create new business opportunities for exponential revenue generation.
Semiconductor Development Process Optimization: I mentored the geographical engineering teams and standardized the workflows, introduced several qualification tools to align with customer quality expectations, and enhanced the efficiency for the timely delivery of products and solutions to our customers. This ensured consistent quality and timely delivery across all teams with a significant positive impact on development cost, enormous savings for customers leading to long-lasting customer relationships leading to significant revenue generation while adapting to evolving emerging technologies.
By addressing these challenges proactively, I successfully led the team and delivered high-performance product architecture for removable semiconductor storage products, exceeding customer expectations and significant cost savings. I also attend key conferences, workshops, and webinars to stay informed about new technologies and solutions.
Collaboration with Industry Experts: Being part of the senior technical team at Astera Labs and engaging with my colleagues, customer interface teams, and global teams provides valuable insights into emerging trends and groundbreaking ideas. Networking with fellow engineers and industry leaders fosters collaboration and sparks new ideas, keeping me aligned with the cutting edge of the field and delivering innovation.
