In a historic visit to Guyana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the country’s Parliament, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the Caribbean nation in 56 years. During his speech, PM Modi highlighted the long-standing ties between India and Guyana, rooted in over 180 years of shared history since the first Indians migrated to the region.

"This is a moment of pride for me as India's Prime Minister," Modi said, recalling his earlier visit to Guyana 24 years ago, which he described as a time of personal curiosity about the Caribbean nation and its people.

Strengthening Democratic Bonds

PM Modi emphasized the common democratic values that bind India and Guyana, describing the relationship as one built on trust, hard work, and mutual respect. "India and Guyana share a deep bond," he stated, adding that these shared values can guide the world toward a better future.

"For the world today, the strongest mantra to move forward is 'Democracy First-Humanity First'," PM Modi said, reinforcing his commitment to democratic principles. He elaborated further, saying, "This is an era of cooperation, not conflict. Democracy is the way forward, not expansionism."

A Vision for Global Harmony

The prime minister’s remarks echoed his earlier statement at an international forum, where he declared that "this is not an era for war." His address in Guyana added a new dimension to that vision, focusing on collaboration and human-centric development over territorial ambitions.

Strengthening India-Guyana Relations

PM Modi’s visit also reflects India’s growing engagement with Caribbean nations. By reinforcing the historical and cultural connections between the two nations, he aimed to further bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and sustainable development.

As the first Indian prime minister to address Guyana’s Parliament, PM Modi’s speech underscores India's role as a global advocate for democracy and peaceful coexistence in a rapidly evolving world order. His call for "cooperation over conflict" sets the tone for a future focused on shared progress and mutual respect.
