Ola, Uber Deny Differential Pricing Based on Apple or Android Phones
Cab aggregators Ola and Uber have denied allegations that they charge higher prices for users with Apple devices compared to those using Android phones in India. Their responses came after the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued notices to investigate the claims.
The controversy started when a viral social media post showed screenshots of Uber fares for the same distance: ₹290.79 on an Android phone and ₹342.47 on an iPhone. The allegations suggested that the difference was due to a perceived higher purchasing power of iPhone users.
Ola’s Clarification
Ola rejected the allegations, emphasizing that their pricing structure is consistent for all users, regardless of the operating system of their devices.
“We have a homogenous pricing structure for all our customers, and we do not differentiate based on the operating system of the user's cellphone for identical rides,” said an Ola spokesperson.
Ola further assured that they have clarified their position to the CCPA and will continue cooperating with the authority to address any misunderstandings regarding their pricing policies.
Uber’s Statement
Uber echoed similar sentiments, denying any practice of differential pricing based on the phone manufacturer or operating system.
“The company does not set prices based on the rider’s phone manufacturer,” an Uber spokesperson stated.
The Allegations
The allegations raised questions about whether cab aggregators exploit consumer data to implement a pricing strategy based on a user’s device. The theory suggests that users with more expensive devices, such as iPhones, are presumed to have higher purchasing power and are charged more.
This practice, if proven true, could violate consumer protection laws, leading to the CCPA’s involvement.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The CCPA is now investigating the claims to determine if there is any merit to the allegations. Both Ola and Uber have pledged full cooperation with the authorities to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, consumer groups have urged greater transparency in fare calculations to ensure fairness across all users.
Public Reaction
The allegations have sparked discussions online, with users debating whether such pricing models are ethical or even legal. Many have demanded stronger regulations to ensure equal treatment for all consumers, regardless of their device type.
