OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT's New Search Feature, Competing Directly with Google and Bing

Table of Contents

In a move that intensifies competition with search giants Google and Bing, OpenAI has added a search functionality to ChatGPT. Available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams members, the new feature aims to provide users with up-to-date information, linking directly to original sources such as news articles and blogs. Built on OpenAI's enhanced GPT-4o model, the search tool refines the company’s earlier SearchGPT prototype and promises a more immersive and accurate experience for ChatGPT users.

How to Access ChatGPT's New Search Feature

To access the search feature, ChatGPT Plus members can utilize the new web search icon located next to the attachment icon. Search is activated by default based on the user’s query, with an option to activate it manually when needed. This feature makes it possible to view sources, allowing users to expand details on linked articles and citations through a dedicated sidebar.

The search tool is designed with special visual layouts for specific topics like weather, sports, stocks, news, and maps, giving users a more interactive experience. For example, weather forecasts are displayed interactively, showcasing conditions across the week. This feature enhances the browsing experience and integrates OpenAI’s real-time response capabilities into a visually engaging format.

Third-Party Collaboration and Privacy Features

To provide timely and accurate responses, OpenAI's search function collaborates with third-party search providers like Bing, using "dissociated search queries." It also shares users' IP addresses with these providers to boost search relevance. Despite privacy concerns, OpenAI has emphasized the importance of data security and plans to uphold privacy standards while improving accuracy in its search results.

Competing with Big Tech's Search Advances

OpenAI’s ChatGPT search feature arrives as other major tech companies, like Meta and Google, enhance their own AI-driven search functions. Meta, for instance, is reportedly working on a similar search engine for Meta AI users, while Google recently expanded its AI overview features globally. These shifts highlight an ongoing push to integrate AI into search technology, enabling faster and more contextual responses for users.

Future Rollouts and Expanded Access

Initially, ChatGPT Search will be exclusive to Plus and Teams subscribers, with enterprise and education customers gaining access in the coming weeks. Free ChatGPT users can expect the feature to roll out over the coming months, while OpenAI plans to extend search access to Advanced Voice mode and even logged-out users eventually.

As ChatGPT’s capabilities continue to grow, OpenAI’s addition of search functionality positions it as a strong competitor in the search industry. With the promise of improved search experiences in areas like shopping and travel, OpenAI is tapping into its latest o-1 reasoning model, aiming to bring dynamic and AI-driven search capabilities to everyday users.
