Padma Bhushan Awardee and Renowned Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Passes Away at 72
Celebrated folk singer Sharda Sinha, recipient of the Padma Bhushan, passed away this evening at the age of 72. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer at AIIMS Delhi since October 25, admitted to the oncology department. Sinha was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow, back in 2017. She succumbed to refractory shock resulting from septicemia while on a ventilator.
Her son shared an emotional tribute online, stating, "Your prayers and love will forever remain with mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to her side."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, "The echo of her melodious songs associated with the great festival of faith, Chhath, will always remain."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute, remarking, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of Shrimati Sharda Sinha ji. She was a multi-talented folk singer who brought the Bhojpuri language to the masses. Her songs will be remembered for years to come. With her passing, the world of folk music has lost a profound voice. My heartfelt condolences to her family and fans during this time. Om Shanti."
Home Minister Amit Shah added his sentiments, noting, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sharda Sinha ji, who brought new heights to Indian music with her enchanting voice for over five decades. Known as the Bihar Kokila, Sharda Sinha ji made Maithili and Bhojpuri folk music beloved by millions, and her contribution to playback singing in films will always be remembered."
Sharda Sinha's contributions to folk music, particularly her songs dedicated to the Chhath festival, left an indelible mark on Indian culture, endearing her to fans across the country. Her voice will continue to resonate, celebrating the beauty of Indian folk traditions.
