New Delhi: Shubman Gill continues to redefine Indian cricket’s record books, achieving yet another milestone in his flourishing career. The young batting sensation struck an unbeaten 101 runs to guide India to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener. His knock, which came on a challenging pitch, helped India successfully chase down a 229-run target with 21 balls to spare.

More significantly, Gill reached his eighth ODI hundred in just 51 innings, breaking the long-standing Indian record for the fastest to the milestone. The previous record was held by Shikhar Dhawan, who took 57 innings, followed by cricketing icons Virat Kohli (68 innings), Gautam Gambhir (98 innings), and Sachin Tendulkar (111 innings).

A Record-Breaking Innings

At just 25 years old, Gill has showcased maturity beyond his years, making a mark as one of India’s most dependable openers. His century against Bangladesh—though his slowest in ODIs at 125 balls—was a masterclass in patience and control, proving crucial in India’s successful chase.

Speaking after receiving the Man of the Match award, Gill reflected on the significance of his knock.

“This is definitely one of the most satisfying innings of my career and my first century in an ICC event. Very happy with the way I played.”

Captain Rohit Sharma Praises Gill's Consistency

India’s captain Rohit Sharma was full of praise for Gill’s performance, highlighting his composure and consistency.

“We all know the kind of class Gill possesses—this shouldn’t surprise anyone. He has been performing consistently, and it was great to see him bat till the end.”
