Tell us about your early life, education, and career journey. 

After completing my engineering degree, I embarked on my professional journey with SRF Limited, a progressive Indian corporation known for its forward-thinking approach. This opportunity not only gave me valuable insights into the industry but also supported my aspirations to pursue advanced management studies. My career path has always been guided by a focus on cultural alignment and the desire for continuous growth. Over the years, I’ve embraced new challenges every three to four years, viewing them as opportunities for both personal and professional advancement.

Three pivotal moments shaped my career trajectory. The first occurred in the mid-1990s when India’s economic liberalization prompted our organization to undergo strategic restructuring in collaboration with McKinsey. I was honored to join the prestigious Young Managers Club and lead internationalization initiatives, culminating in my appointment as Head of Projects in Dubai. This role involved establishing a cutting-edge manufacturing facility with a $40 million investment, a milestone that significantly boosted my career.

The second defining moment was taking the key role in Total Quality Management, Global Supply Chain, and IT operations in Dubai. These critical responsibilities expanded my expertise and paved the way for my journey to becoming a CEO. Recognized as a high-potential leader through HAY’s rigorous evaluation process, I stepped into the CEO role at SRF Overseas Limited in 2004, where I spearheaded acquisitions in South Africa and Thailand, marking a significant milestone in my career.

The third turning point came 15 years ago, when I strategically shifted my career focus by joining my current organization, marking the beginning of a fulfilling chapter in my professional journey.

Role at Dubai Investments 

What is your current role, and what do you enjoy most about your work? 

I currently serve as the Investment Director and Head of Portfolio Management at Dubai Investment Industries LLC. In this role, I oversee the Venture Capital sub-holding and Industrial sub-holding divisions. Over the past 15 years, I’ve played a key role in driving new greenfield investments and successfully managing the growth and divestment of various businesses, creating substantial value for shareholders.

Among our many achievements, I take particular pride in our investments in healthcare and educational projects. These initiatives have not only delivered state-of-the-art medical facilities to communities but also fostered future leaders through world-class universities. The divestment strategies I have shaped include ventures in dairy farming, agro-oil production, and pharmaceuticals, all of which have yielded exceptional results.

Fostering Collaboration and Growth 

How does your leadership style contribute to building successful teams? 

During my early career, I was shaped by the collaborative and team-oriented leadership training provided by my previous organization. These experiences laid the foundation for my belief in “leading from the back,” a philosophy that prioritizes guiding teams from a supportive position rather than a prominent one.

This leadership approach creates an environment where collaboration, innovation, and individual growth flourish. By fostering ownership and accountability within the team, I’ve found this style leads to sustainable success. My advice to fellow C-suite leaders is to embrace this approach to cultivate cohesive teams that can independently achieve collective goals.

Facing Challenges with Positivity and Focus 

What is one major challenge you’ve faced in your career, and how did you overcome it? 

Challenges are inevitable in any career, and I’ve always approached them objectively, separating emotions from the problem at hand. By identifying the root cause and staying focused, I’ve managed to maintain a positive outlook even in adversity. Self-belief and a reminder that setbacks are temporary have been my guiding principles in overcoming obstacles.

How do you stay ahead in your industry? 

The key to staying ahead lies in continuous learning and adaptability. While academic qualifications provide an entry point, attitude and competence truly determine success. I’ve always prioritized smart working, leveraging technology, and remaining flexible to navigate the dynamic demands of the industry. Additionally, staying connected with a strong professional network has allowed me to exchange ideas, gain new insights, and remain at the forefront of industry trends.
