Sunita Williams Sends Diwali Greetings from Space: ‘Time of Joy as Goodness Prevails’
NASA astronaut and Indian-origin icon Sunita Williams brought a touch of Diwali celebration to space this year. In a heartwarming video message from the International Space Station (ISS), Williams extended Diwali wishes to people celebrating on Earth and at the White House.
“Greetings from the ISS. I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world,” said Williams in the video shared across social media. “This year, I have the unique opportunity to celebrate Diwali from 260 miles above the Earth on the ISS.”
In her message, Williams reflected on the importance of Diwali in her life, recalling how her father instilled a love for Indian traditions and taught her about the significance of the festival of lights. She described Diwali as "a time of joy as goodness in the world prevails," capturing the spirit of the festival.
Williams also expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for celebrating Diwali and recognizing the contributions of the Indian-American community. Her message from space emphasized the unifying joy of Diwali, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness.
