Margaret Adu, Founder and Managing Director of Aomega Group Inc., embarked on her architectural journey with a singular determination—to work as an architect. However, securing a position in Edmonton was far more challenging than expected. Undeterred, she reached out to every architectural firm in the city, introducing herself as a qualified architect from Ghana. Yet, rejection became a recurring response.

Despite the repeated refusals, she refused to give up. One of the last firms she contacted was located near her residence. Realizing she could approach them directly, she made the bold decision to walk in and present her case in person. With her portfolio and resume in hand, she confidently told them, "I just spoke to you, and you said you didn’t have a job, but I want a job. I understand—I don’t have Canadian education or experience, I am a Black woman with a gap in her teeth, I speak with an accent, and you might think I’m not suitable for the position. But I’m not going anywhere. In fact, I’ll work for free."

Her determination caught the attention of one of the firm's partners, who decided to review her portfolio. Impressed by her work and recognizing her education from the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he acknowledged her talent and potential.

Beyond architecture, Margaret has established herself as a visionary leader in business and community service. She is the Honorary Consul of Ghana for Calgary, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, has served as the President of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Calgary, and has played a significant role in personal care home management. Her company, Aomega Lodges, was awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, achieving a 100% rating for personal care home accreditation.

Margaret’s contributions have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award, CTV Inspired Albertan, and the Immigrant of Distinction Award for Business. She was also named among the “20 Compelling Calgarians,” a testament to her remarkable impact on the community. Additionally, she has received recognition from the Ghana Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Black and Gold Awards.

With an unwavering spirit and a passion for making a difference, Margaret Adu continues to inspire through her leadership, resilience, and dedication to community empowerment.
