The remains of a 12-year-old girl have been discovered in Australia's Northern Territory following a tragic crocodile attack. The Northern Territory Police reported that her remains were found in a river system near the Indigenous community of Palumpa, where she had gone missing two days earlier.

Confirmation of Crocodile Attack in Northern Territory

Northern Territory Police confirmed on Thursday that the injuries on the girl's body were consistent with a crocodile attack. Her remains were located after an "extensive search effort," according to Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson.

"The recovery has been made. It was particularly gruesome and a sad, devastating outcome," stated Senior Sergeant Gibson. "It was an extremely difficult, essentially 36 hours... For the family, it is the most devastating outcome possible for them. They are in a state of extreme shock and disbelief."

In a statement shared on the Northern Territory's emergency services Facebook page, Gibson mentioned that officers are providing support to the family and the local community.

Efforts to Locate the Crocodile in Northern Territory

Officials are continuing their efforts to locate and trap the crocodile, as these territorial creatures often remain in the same area. Senior Sergeant Gibson emphasized the ongoing search for the animal involved in the Northern Territory crocodile attack.

"We live in a place where crocodiles occupy our water places," stated Northern Territory Police Minister Brent Potter. "It's just a reminder to stay out of the water as best we can."

Crocodile Population in Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is home to the world's largest wild crocodile population, with more than 100,000 freshwater and saltwater predators. The saltwater crocodile, known for its size and danger, can grow up to 20 feet long and is prevalent along the coastline and waterways of the Territory. These crocodiles have a diverse diet, including fish, cows, buffaloes, wild boar, turtles, birds, and crabs.
