Trump Raises Concerns Over Panama Canal Amid Rising Chinese Influence
Former US President Donald Trump has voiced alarm over growing Chinese influence in Panama, particularly concerning the Panama Canal, a vital waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, warning that the canal must never fall into "the wrong hands."
Citing the canal’s construction by the US over a century ago, Trump emphasized, “It was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else.” His remarks follow concerns over Panama's "excessive tariffs" on canal usage and China's expanding global presence, including its naval capabilities.
The Panama Canal, one of the world's most strategic trade routes, has been under Panamanian control since 1999. Responding to Trump’s comments, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed the claims, stating, “Every square meter of the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and will continue belonging to Panama.” Mulino assured there is no foreign control over the canal, adding that he seeks a "respectful relationship" with the incoming Trump administration.
The exchange highlights tensions between the US and China, particularly as China boasts the world's largest navy, surpassing the US in fleet size. Trump’s warning underscores concerns over global trade security and the geopolitical significance of the canal in maintaining freedom of navigation.
As the US grapples with China’s growing influence, the Panama Canal remains a symbol of strategic power and economic connectivity, sparking debates on its role in international diplomacy.
