Trump Threatens to Reclaim Control of Panama Canal Over "Excessive Fees"
US President-elect Donald Trump has warned Panama about reclaiming control of the Panama Canal, accusing the country of charging excessive fees for its use. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that if Panama fails to manage the canal "in an acceptable fashion," the United States would demand its return.
The Panama Canal, a vital global trade route, was largely built and managed by the US for decades before full control was handed over to Panama in 1999. Trump's comments reflect a rare instance of a US leader suggesting the possibility of pushing a sovereign nation to cede territory.
Concerns Over Chinese Influence
Trump also expressed concerns about potential Chinese involvement in the canal's management, warning that the passage must not fall into the "wrong hands." He criticized Panama for what he described as "ridiculous" fees, arguing that the canal's transfer to Panama was a gesture of cooperation from the United States.
"If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question," Trump wrote.
Diplomatic Implications
The Panamanian embassy in Washington has not yet responded to the remarks. Trump's statement signals a potential shift in US foreign policy under his leadership, emphasizing a more assertive stance in protecting American interests.
As the President-elect prepares to assume office, his comments underline his willingness to challenge long-standing diplomatic agreements and assert US dominance on the global stage.
