UP Police Seize 12.5 kg of Gold Worth ₹9.25 Crore on Yamuna Expressway, Arrests Made
In a major breakthrough, the Mathura Police seized 12.5 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹9.25 crore, during a routine check on the Yamuna Expressway. The seizure took place at Mant Toll on Tuesday when officers discovered the gold hidden inside a car traveling from Delhi to Deoria. The occupants of the vehicle were unable to provide the necessary documentation for the gold, prompting further investigations by the GST and Income Tax (IT) departments.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rural Mathura, Trigun Vishen, confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the seizure. "During a check at Mant Toll, 12.5 kg of gold was found in a vehicle. The individuals claimed they had brought the gold from Delhi, but they could not provide any official paperwork. As a result, the GST and IT departments were notified, and investigations are ongoing. The arrested individuals are from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar," Vishen told ANI.
Involvement of GST and IT Departments
Given the large quantity of gold and the lack of supporting documents, authorities have brought in the GST and IT departments to conduct a detailed investigation. The departments will assess whether the gold was being transported illegally to evade taxes, and further actions will be taken based on their findings.
The crackdown is part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with financial regulations, especially with large sums of money or valuable assets like gold. The authorities are expected to conduct more inquiries to determine the source of the gold and the intended destination.
Festival Season Heightens Security Across UP
As the festival season approaches, UP Police have stepped up security checks across the state to curb illegal activities, including smuggling and trafficking. In a separate incident, authorities in Ghaziabad recently seized a large stockpile of illegal firecrackers in two different raids, just ahead of the Diwali celebrations.
The first raid, conducted by the Indirapuram police, led to the arrest of a man named Majid in Makanpur village. During the operation, 63 cartons of illegal firecrackers were confiscated from a shop near the Hanuman temple. Majid, a 26-year-old resident of Sector 12 in Vijay Nagar, was detained for allegedly selling and distributing the contraband.
In another raid, Ghaziabad Police targeted a kite shop in the Delhi Gate area, uncovering a substantial quantity of illegal firecrackers. These actions form part of a statewide crackdown on the sale and distribution of unauthorized goods ahead of the festival season, ensuring public safety.
