Virat Kohli Breaks Tendulkar's Record: Fastest to 27,000 International Runs
Indian cricketing icon Virat Kohli has etched his name in the record books yet again, becoming the fastest cricketer to reach 27,000 international runs. During the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 623 innings by achieving the feat in just 594 innings, making him the first to do so under 600 innings.
Tendulkar’s record stood unchallenged until Kohli's dominance in recent years, marking him as a legend in his own right. Other notable cricketers who have achieved the 27,000-run mark include Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Australia’s Ricky Ponting, who both took significantly more innings to reach the same tally.
Kohli’s performance came amid India’s rapid scoring spree, spearheaded by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hit a 31-ball half-century, and captain Rohit Sharma. India declared their innings at 285/9 with a 52-run lead, thanks to aggressive batting that bore resemblance to England's "Bazball" style of play.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan commented on India’s aggressive approach, drawing parallels to England's recent strategy. Despite Kohli’s record-breaking performance, India faces pressure to finish the Test series strongly and maintain their momentum in the World Test Championship race.
Looking ahead, Kohli and Team India will host New Zealand for a three-Test series in October before embarking on a challenging tour of Australia, which will be critical for India’s hopes in the World Test Championship.
