Dubai: India’s thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final has reignited discussions about the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in international cricket. While no official announcements have been made regarding their retirements, Kohli’s post-match comments suggested confidence in the team’s future.

India’s journey to the title was not without challenges. The team faced setbacks earlier in the year, including series defeats against Sri Lanka (ODIs), New Zealand (Tests), and Australia (Border-Gavaskar Trophy). However, their resilience shone through as they secured a record third Champions Trophy title in Dubai on Sunday.

Kohli Praises Team’s Growth and Future Prospects

Speaking after the win, Kohli emphasized the importance of experience and mentorship within the squad.

"It’s been an incredible journey. We wanted to bounce back after a tough Australian tour and winning a major tournament like this is special. There’s immense talent in the dressing room, and as seniors, we are happy to guide the younger players. That’s what makes this Indian team so strong," Kohli said.

He also acknowledged the contributions of key players like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, stating that the squad is well-prepared to dominate world cricket for years to come.

"When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better place. I feel we have a squad that’s ready to take on the world for the next eight years," he added.

Appreciation for New Zealand’s Fighting Spirit

Kohli also praised the New Zealand team, particularly highlighting their discipline and consistency despite a smaller talent pool.

"New Zealand has always been a tough opponent. Their ability to execute plans efficiently makes them one of the most competitive teams in world cricket. They are easily the best fielding unit, and while I feel for my good friend Kane Williamson, I know they will continue to perform at the highest level," he remarked.

India’s victory marks a significant moment in their cricketing history, with the senior players playing a crucial role in guiding the team to success. While speculation about retirements continues, Kohli’s comments suggest a smooth transition is already underway, ensuring the team remains strong for future challenges.
