Ahead of the November 5 US elections, President Joe Biden extended Diwali greetings, celebrating the festival’s significance and acknowledging the South Asian American community’s vital role in American society. Speaking from the East Room of the White House, President Biden noted that Diwali is now “proudly celebrated” at the White House, a reflection of the growing visibility and influence of South Asian culture in the US.

“The South Asian American community has enriched every part of American life,” President Biden said, describing it as one of the fastest-growing and most engaged communities worldwide. Diwali, a symbol of light overcoming darkness, resonates deeply with American values, especially during challenging times for American democracy.

President Biden emphasized the importance of unity and historical awareness as essential to the “Idea of America.” Addressing the gathering, he shared, “This is not my house; this is your house... We face an inflection point today, reminding us to never take the Idea of America for granted.” He highlighted the significance of the democratic process, where debate and dissent are natural, but unity remains key to sustaining the nation’s foundational values.

The President also reflected on hosting the first Diwali celebration with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, at the Vice President’s residence in 2016, underscoring his long-standing commitment to inclusivity. He celebrated the diversity within his administration, mentioning leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris and US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy as reflections of America’s inclusivity.

A History of Diwali at the White House

Diwali celebrations at the White House date back to 2003, initiated under President George W. Bush, with each subsequent administration adding its own unique touch. President Barack Obama famously lit a diya in the Oval Office, marking a significant recognition of the festival. President Trump continued the tradition in 2017, celebrating Diwali with his daughter Ivanka and other prominent Indian American officials.

In recent years, the White House Diwali reception has featured traditional music, dancing, and vibrant displays of light, representing the spirit of the festival. This year’s event was no exception, with guests celebrating the festival of lights in a space that honors unity, cultural diversity, and the contributions of South Asian Americans.
